"MGIB / 911 and the Roll Back"
By Gary Sarazin

Individuals must complete the minimum active duty service requirement for eligibility for either the MGIB or Post 9-11 GI Bill.

In other words, if the member has served the minimum service and is already eligible for the benefit, early discharge/release will have no impact.  If the member is not yet qualified for the benefit, their early discharge/release could impact their ability to become eligible.

General eligibility criteria for 100% of the MGIB is a fully honorable discharge (discharges "under honorable conditions" and "general" discharges do not establish eligibility for MGIB) and 36 months of continuous active duty.  There are exceptions depending on the category the individual enlisted for and the specific reason for separation (VA Pamphlet 22-90-2, Revised Mar 2007 is helpful for those that don't complete the full 36 months of service and is available on the VA web site at:  http://www.gibill.va.gov/documents/CH30_Pamphlet.pdf .

The minimum active duty service requirement for eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill is 90 days (40% of benefits).  For full eligibility (100% benefit) a member must have served at least 36 months aggregate service or have service at least 30 continuous days on active duty and is discharged due to service-connected disability. A summary of Post-9/11 GI Bill Benefits can be reviewed at:  http://www.gibill.va.gov/post-911/post-911-gi-bill-summary/ .
